Elephant Sands, Botswana

by Drew Barba

I woke up this morning really cold. (who knew Africa could be so freezing?!) I put on two shirts and two jackets, packed my bag, and helped Dad take down the tent. We rode in the bus for a few hours and arrived at “Elephant Sands”.

Being thirty feet from elephants is an amazing experience. Their incredible size, the way they interact with each other, and their unique way of life are so interesting it’s hard to look away. When you look in their eyes, you don’t see a strange wild animal, you see a person. That person has feelings and emotions, has gone through sadness and joy, and is capable of hate and love. Elephants aren’t just wild animals, they’re people.

The area had campsites and huts around the pool, plus a protected space where we could watch the elephants. We got drinks at the bar and did homework too. The patio was a cool stone with interesting animal designs. There was also a refreshing pool that was a nice size. Later that afternoon, we went on a sunset walk. We saw an elephant and the guide was nice but it was really long and I don’t think the walk through the spiky trees was worth it. But the trip to Elephant Sands was DEFINITELY worth it.

  2. Hi Drew! So excited to hear your voice as I read your words and feel a little like we’re there with you. Elephants are such an amazing window into how much we are like animals and animals are like us. They are so kind, brave, and loving. Grateful you’ve had amazing time near them and can’t wait to hear more.
