North Carolina Mountains

by Kate Barba

Last week we got to spend a few short days with some of my side of the family in Brevard, North Carolina.  Brevard is the “Land of Waterfalls” in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains (near Asheville).  My parents retired here many years ago and we love visiting!

Our first outing was a waterfall hike (of course).  Cousins enjoyed tromping through the woods to a covered bridge and scrambling on rocks at the water’s edge.  I enjoyed the southern rain forest vegetation and the gorgeous views of High Falls and Triple Falls in the nearby DuPont State Recreational Forest.

One evening we joined in a Brevard tradition…street dancing!  Bluegrass music on Main Street, complete with square and contra dance instruction and calling by the fantastic Whitewater Bluegrass Company.  Shoutout to the American Legion Post 88 for beverages and bar food beforehand.

A trail ride through the Pisgah National Forest was enjoyed by Pete and the cousins!  Highly recommend Pisgah Forest Stables, though the one hour was “too short” and we’ll do the longer ride next time.

Other great family activities (and food!) we packed in included a picnic and river float near Sycamore Flats, s’mores at Grandma and Grandpa’s gazebo, a trip to the “coolest toy store on the planet”, and an ice cream from Dolly’s.  The adult kids got away for an evening craft beer at Burning Blush in their biergarten.

In the past we’ve also enjoyed gem mining, yummy BBQ, a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a beer flight at Ecusta, a visit to the Biltmore mansion, pottery shopping, and a long float on the French Broad River.  Maybe next year…

Thanks to Grandma Mary and sisters Sue and Becky for their photos! A big wave to Grandpa Larry and cousins Grace and Dean!

  1. My brother-in-law has a place in Highlands, probably not too far from your family. It is truly beautiful there! Glad to see you are enjoying yourselves!
