Kruger National Park, South Africa

by Kate Barba

Today we went into world-renowned Kruger National Park for an all-day game drive.  You can drive yourself through the park, so we got an early start and arrived just past dawn.  The park itself is beautiful with a variety of landscapes from riverside forests to open grasslands.  We only drove a small portion of the park, but the diversity and sheer numbers of animals we saw was amazing!  We saw our first big cat, plus a barrel of monkeys, a tower of giraffes, a parade of elephants and herd after herd of impala.  Gwyn decided to do a population study by counting the number of different times we saw each kind of animal:

Animal sightings:

  • Impala – 58 (!)
  • Giraffe – 10
  • Elephant – 9
  • Kudu – 5
  • Wildebeest – 5
  • Monkey – 5
  • Warthog – 4
  • Zebra – 4
  • Hippopotamus – 3
  • Buffalo – 2
  • Hyena – 2
  • Leopard – 2
  • Crocodile – 1
  • Lion – 1

Without further ado: our “best of” pictures from the day!

Impala are the deer of Africa
